Trump and Putin’s Key Advisors Revealed in Crucial Talks

The high-stakes meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska has moved behind closed doors, where discussions are unfolding in an intriguing “three-on-three” format featuring each leader’s most trusted advisors. This carefully selected group of seasoned diplomats and policy experts will play a pivotal role in shaping whatever agreements might emerge from these historic talks.

On the Russian side, President Putin has brought his most experienced foreign policy hands. Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s veteran Foreign Minister, brings more than two decades of diplomatic experience to the table, though his reputation has been tarnished by sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Alongside him sits Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s long-time foreign policy aide and former ambassador to the United States, whose deep understanding of U.S.-Russia relations makes him invaluable in these negotiations. Notably, Russia’s Defense Minister is expected to join later in an expanded format, suggesting military discussions may be on the agenda.

Facing them for the United States are equally formidable figures. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, known for his hawkish foreign policy stance, represents the more traditional wing of American diplomacy. His presence suggests tough negotiations on security matters. Completing the American trio is Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy and personal confidant, whose involvement signals the former president’s preference for trusted loyalists in sensitive discussions. Witkoff’s unexpected participation in Eastern European matters, despite his Middle East portfolio, reveals Trump’s unconventional approach to diplomacy.

This isn’t the first dance for these advisors – all four participated in Ukraine peace talks in Saudi Arabia earlier this year, though notably without Trump and Putin present at that time. Their prior experience negotiating together could either smooth the current discussions or lead to entrenched positions, depending on how much guidance they receive from their principals.

Perhaps most striking is who isn’t at the table. Ukrainian President Zelensky and his representatives have been excluded from discussions that will profoundly affect their country’s future. Also absent is U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg, whose omission raises questions about the administration’s current priorities regarding the ongoing conflict.

As Trump and Putin oversee these negotiations, the composition of their teams reveals much about their respective approaches. Putin relies on career diplomats who have served him for decades, while Trump mixes traditional cabinet members with personal allies. The dynamic between these six men in that closed room may well determine whether this summit produces meaningful progress or simply reinforces existing divisions. With Ukraine’s fate hanging in the balance, the world waits to see what emerges from these carefully structured but exclusionary talks.
