Celtics Trade Niang for RJ Luis Jr.

Celtics Make Strategic Moves: Trading Niang for RJ Luis Jr. & Signing Boucher

The Boston Celtics continue their offseason adjustments by trading forward Georges Niang to the Utah Jazz in exchange for undrafted rookie RJ Luis Jr., along with two future second-round picks, as reported by ESPN. This move helps the Celtics further distance themselves from the second tax apron, a key financial goal for the franchise this summer.

Niang, who was acquired by Boston in a three-team trade earlier this offseason, spent four seasons with the Jazz before his brief stint with the Celtics. By moving him, Boston clears $8.2 million in salary, aligning with their strategy to reduce payroll after trading away key players like Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porziņģis. With Jayson Tatum sidelined due to an Achilles injury, the Celtics aren’t prioritizing immediate contention, making Niang’s salary an unnecessary burden.

In return, the Celtics acquire RJ Luis Jr., the 2025 Big East Player of the Year from St. John’s. Though undrafted, Luis Jr. signed a two-way contract with the Jazz and now gets a fresh opportunity in Boston. While his immediate impact may be limited, this trade was primarily about financial flexibility rather than roster upgrades.

For Utah, this is a low-risk, high-reward move. They receive two second-round picks essentially for absorbing Niang’s contract. He could either contribute as a veteran presence or become a trade asset before the February deadline. If not moved, his deal expires next summer, giving the Jazz future cap relief.

Celtics Bolster Frontcourt with Chris Boucher

Alongside the Niang trade, Boston is reportedly signing free agent forward Chris Boucher to a one-year, $3.3 million deal. Boucher, known for his energy and shot-blocking ability, provides much-needed depth in the frontcourt following the departures of Porziņģis, Luke Kornet, and likely Al Horford.

With a thin big-man rotation, Boucher should see significant playing time. His versatility as a stretch big and rim protector makes him a valuable addition, especially at such a team-friendly contract.

Smart Financial Decisions for the Future

President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has prioritized financial flexibility while still making savvy roster moves. Swapping Niang for RJ Luis Jr. and adding Boucher demonstrates a clear plan: cut costs without completely sacrificing competitiveness.

While the Celtics may not be title contenders next season, these moves position them for future flexibility, allowing them to retool around Tatum once he returns. The acquisition of RJ Luis Jr., even as a developmental piece, could pay off if he blossoms into a reliable rotation player.

For now, Boston fans should expect more calculated moves as the franchise balances short-term pragmatism with long-term ambitions.
